Primal Scream – LIVE at the Eden Sessions!

24 Jun

A person could not be scrutinised for thoughts that Primal Scream might not ‘show up’ at Eden. But not only did they ‘show up’, they produced a show that can questionably be up there as Eden’s best ever session.

Kicking off the evening were The Horrors, a band from Southend who have enjoyed moderate success since forming in 2005.

Whilst their dark-ish persona’s were in full flow throughout their set, The Horrors did not embrace the Cornish crowd and it almost appeared as if they were treating the gig as a chore instead of a fortuity.

After this Horror-ish performance (bad pun intended), fans were treated to what they had been waiting for, Primal Scream – live!

Transporting their Screamadelica tour to Cornwall, the Scream were on fire throughout the night – causing an up-for-it crowd to leave the arena with cheerful smiles on their worn-out faces.

Opening with ‘Movin’ On Up’, the group instantly got the crowd “mad fer it” as bassist Mani would say. All fears that they would not be at their best were now gone, and the fans could enjoy the infectious sound of an album that was habitually acknowledged as one of the best albums of the 90’s.

Lead singer Bobby Gillespie, who celebrated his 49th birthday just a day before the performance, was on top form. Judging by his presence on stage, age does not even come into the equation here because he commanded it from start to finish.

As the whistling introduction of ‘Don’t Fight It, Feel It’ occurred, many fans were transported back to the mid-90’s rave scene. And for those that weren’t alive or part of this rave scene, there was still the option of dancing along – infected by this odd, corrupting sound.

The set was starting to draw to a close – brought about by the loud heralding interrogative; “Just what is it that you want to do?” followed by the reply of “We wanna be free to do what we wanna do”.

This was the start of the illustrious ‘Loaded’ which convinced more and more people to dance along with this brilliant vibe that Primal Scream were emitting.

And then came their final effort ‘Come Together’ – a song which got the whole crowd singing. You didn’t have to be a fan of Primal Scream to know the lyric “Come together as one”.

Whilst this was their last song, fans knew that the band would return if given a decent encore. Upon what started as a few cheers and claps, developed into to the lyrics of ‘Come Together’. This evidently brought the band back onto the stage of which fans were treated to hits from other areas of Primal Scream’s back-catalogue.

Primal Scream were colourful, exuberant and exciting in this performance. Nothing could stop them (Mani especially – see right) redefining the word ‘cool’.

If you were lucky enough to see this performance, then cherish it in the back of your mind for a long time – and when someone brings up Primal Scream in the future, you can dazzle them by simply stating, “I was there”.

Primal Scream played:

Movin’ On Up
Slip Inside This House
Don’t Fight It, Feel It
I’m Comin’ Down
Shine Like Stars
Inner Flight
Higher Than The Sun
Come Together
Country Girl
