Backbeat Soundsystem – Truly Unique

21 Apr

Put down your pasties and jump off your tractors because Cornwall has got a new band to be proud of.

Backbeat Soundsystem are a collection of eight young talented lads – united by their Reggae-ish music – which itself sounds truly unique.

Having grown massively since their inception in 2008, Backbeat are now becoming known right across the country, with a considerable amount of people getting really excited about them and wondering if they might just make it all the way to the top.

But their emergence was something of a coincidence…

“Musically, none of us actually came from a really reggae background,” explains vocalist Dean. “Obviously we all liked reggae, but none of us were heavily into it until we started the band”.

“At the end of the day, we write songs that we can pump out live. But they also have a relevance to them – so it really doesn’t matter whether you’re listening to them in your car or in a club, they should hopefully affect you in some way!”

There may be the odd few out there who would argue that Reggae has no roots down in Cornwall whatsoever. Backbeat are keen to dispute this though:

“I’d say 99.9% of music listened to and performed in Cornwall has no ‘roots’ historically in Cornwall in particular – but that is what’s so liberating about music!” says guitarist Sam.

“After all, It’d be a pretty bland musical landscape if people were confined only to writing traditional forms of music, depending entirely on their place of birth.

“We say our music is ‘Reggae’ so people have a vague expectation on what they’ll hear when they listen to us. Nothing else.

In 2009, the band performed at Glastonbury (yes, Glastonbury) – and this summer they will be playing at Boardmasters in Newquay, alongside names like Fatboy Slim, Klaxons, Bombay Bicycle Club and Eliza Doolittle, which shows just how far they’ve come.

“Fundamentally, it’s all about the music. A big part of what we do is playing live and it’s important to build a fan base through touring and getting yourself out there for people to hear.”

It is a breath of fresh air to see a band rising up from the nothingness and becoming so vibrant, so eccentric, and so inventive.
